Since 1907 Australia's surf lifesavers have patrolled beaches all around Australia, saving many lives and promoting surf safety and surfing lifestyle. Surf Life Saving Australia has over 130,000 members, of all ages, and more than 300 surf life saving clubs all along the coastline. Surf lifesavers give their time as volunteers in the service of their communities. They learn to become fit, skilled and team oriented Australians. The vast majority of Australians lives in cities and towns on, or near, the coast. The beach has always been a place to can relax, play and have fun with families. There are thousands of junior surf lifesavers (Nippers) in Australia. Children can join the nippers from as young as 7 old. The junior program aims is to teach children to appreciate the beach and surf, and
how to surf safely. The program helps train young people in a healthy lifestyle and to become lifesavers and participate in surf carnivals. They can also participate in fun activities, wading, running, swimming, surfing and board paddling and generally gain surfing experience. The children are trained to compete in state, regional and club surf lifesaving carnivals.
