Cave Tours have always been very popular with locals and visitors and Australia has a huge array of caves to explore. Most Australians can remember being taken on cave trips with their families as children. Jenolan Caves, near Sydney, is perhaps Australia`s most visited and outstanding cave system - with 11 spectacular show caves, pure underground rivers and amazing formations. A range of cave tours and other activities are available to suit every age and fitness level. There are fantastic caves with public access in every State of Australia, and a large number of caves for the caving and cave diving enthusiasts. Guided tours are available that provide lots of information about the caves - their discovery, environment, history and unique wildlife including glow worms, yabbies, fish, eels and shrimp. Some of the more remote caves are found on the Nullarbor Plain in South Australia. There are a large number of caves there, some that extremely large with several kilometres of passages. Some caves have been approved for public use, namely Murrawijinie Caves north of the Nullarbor roadhouse. Koonalda Cave and Bunabie Blowhole may be viewed from the top, but other caves can only be entered in the company of National Parks and Wildlife Officers or as part of an accredited caving group. Strict regulations apply. The freshwater sinkhole of Piccaninne Ponds is regarded as one of the best snorkelling and cave diving sites in Australia. With visibility that can exceed 40 m it offers an amazing and unique underwater world where tiny fish dart through the water, aquatic plants grow up to six metres tall and mysterious underwater caves beckon. These caves attract experienced divers from around the world. For snorkellers, you can drift across the top of The Chasm and peer into the dark depths below. Or let the current gently carry you along while looking for aquatic life such as fish, shrimp, yabbies and tortoises searching for food. To protect this environment a permit to snorkel or dive is compulsory. A booking system is used, allowing a limit of 8 people in the water at any one time.
