Various locations display the range of temperate and tropical butterfly species. Seasonal variations mean that not all species are available for display at all times,
however there is always a great variety on display whenever you visit. Some of the facilities are associated with Zoos - such as the Butterfly House at Melbourne Zoo which has bred 500,000 butterflies and has a wonderful display right trough the year.
The Butterfly House has been a favourite attraction at the zoo for more than 20 years with visitors strolling though clouds of hundreds of butterflies in a beautiful natural tropical setting.
The populations are hard to maintain because the specific plants required for feeding and laying eggs must be provided for every single species. The butterflies lay their eggs on specially provided unique food plants in the Butterfly House environment. The potted plants are then taken to breeding facilities where the eggs hatch into caterpillars and grow into mature butterflies. The adults may only live for several days.
Several operators also offer seasonal Butterfly Watching tours where you can see butterflies in their natural environment. Butterfly Watching is often included with other packages or as part of various wildlife tours.
