The Mackay and Whitsundays Region, on the north coast of Queensland has a beautiful blend of coral reef, islands and beaches, national parks and wonderful rainforests, spectacular views, exciting fishing, fascinating historical townships, friendly communities, great diving, fantastic shopping and fabulous dining and wineries. At the heart of the region is Mackay itself, a vibrant interesting city with charming Art Deco buildings and streets lined with palm trees. The region also includes the wonderful Whitsundays - a fabulous offshore reef area that includes more than 70 islands floating like jewels in the turquoise waters of the Coral Sea. You can explore this incredible place from the bow of a charter yacht, through your mask on a magical dive on the multi-coloured coral reef teeming with fish, or from your deck-chair with a cool drink on a beautiful resort beach. The Mackay Region offers a special holiday experience with a wonderful diverse array of attractions and activities. For the Mackay and Whitsundays Region extends along the coastline from the area south of Bowen to Mackay, Sarina and further south to Clairview, north of Fraser Island. The resorts and charter boat operators offer full-day fishing charters, snorkelling tours, yacht cruises and shipwreck diving tours. You can also get access to a number of exclusive island National Parks as well as the resort island. Offshore there are all the wonders of the Whitsunday Islands. The region`s rich and colourful past is also on display at various heritage sites and Aboriginal Culture Centres. The Region has a wonderful array of diverse attractions and activities to suit every visitor and tourist. The non-tourist economy is mostly based on sugar, coal and beef cattle.
