Gladstone is a thriving, modern city based on mining but with a magnificent array of natural attractions, National Parks, offshore coral cays, rivers, waterways and beaches. All the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef lie offshore in the Coral Sea. Boyne Island is famous for its lovely coastal parks, Tannum Sands offers secluded, sandy beaches that are ideal for fishing, swimming, surfing and other water based recreation. Offshore is Heron Island, which one of the rare spots where you can stay in a resort and quite literally step off the beach and dive on the reef. Heron and nearby Wilson Island offer a unique reef experiences. The relaxed island lifestyle, and emphasis on exploring and enjoying the reef experience, sets Heron Island apart from other resort islands. Inland in the Gladstone Hinterland you can step back in time and relive the early days of the region at Calliope River Historical Village, located a few minutes north of Calliope on the Bruce Highway. The Boyne Valley with the small towns of Nagoorin, Ubobo, Builyan and Many Peaks, is also worth visiting with its many heritage sites and also the nearby Kroombit Tops National Park.
