Hughenden is a small town in the North West Region of Queensland on the banks of the Flinders River, situated on the Flinders Highway, about 1,400 km north-west of Brisbane and 375 km west of Townsville. The major rural enterprise around Hughenden is sheep and cattle grazing and fossils. Visit the Flinders Discovery Centre and see the 7m long Muttaburrasaurus fossil called `Hughie`, and a fascinating fossil collection. Drop in to the Information Centre for displays of the local history and information about sheep grazing and its culture. The Porcupine Gorge National Park is a spectacular gorge known as `Little Grand Canyon` which drops 120 m from the surrounding countryside. The bottom of the gorge has deep pools with fish and tortoises and interesting flora and fauna. There are camping grounds at the Pyramid Lookout. The Basalt Byway is a fascinating scenic drive through the scenic volcanic basalt countryside, with many excellent lookouts, bushwalking tracks and diverse flora and fauna. The Eromanga Sea Byway 4WD track passes around the edge of the prehistoric inland sea and is a great place to collect fossil. The Chudleigh Park Gemfields are a great place for fossicking for rare sapphires, Peridot and black spinel.
