Cloncurry is an important town servicing the North West Region of Queensland, located about 770 km west of the city of Townsville on the Cloncurry River. The town to service Great Australia Mine after Copper was discovered in 1867. Copper and gold mining, transport and mining services and sheep and beef cattle grazing are now the major industry in the region. The first flight of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia took place from Cloncurry on May 15, 1928, using an aircraft hired from QANTAS. A Royal Flying Doctor Service museum is situated in the town. Cloncurry played an important part in the establishment of QANTAS, and the historic QANTAS Hanger is still used at the airfield, where `Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Service` is still shown over the door. You can visit a working open-cut mine run by the Ernest Henry Mine Tours. The Mary Kathleen Memorial Park and Museum showcases memorabilia and the history of Mary Kathleen, Cloncurry, and surrounding district. Key features are the Burke and Wills history display, Aboriginal artefacts and the gem and mineral collection. The Cloncurry River and Chinaman Creek are popular recreation spots.
