Burketown is an isolated rural service town, tourist centre and Barramundi fishing destination located on the Gulf of Carpentaria in the North West Region of Queensland. It is situated on the Savannah Way about 2110 km north-west of Brisbane and 410 km north of Cloncurry. Burketown is renowned the Barramundi Capital of Australia. The Albert River close to Burketown is tidal and navigable and the Gulf and the Albert River Estuary can be accessed from Burketown by boat for short or long-duration fishing trips. Burketown is surrounded by flat, grassy plains in the south and huge salt marshes and wetlands to the northern area. The wetlands are breeding grounds of barramundi, crocodiles and prawns and supports huge flocks of birds. Some of the local attractions include: # Frederick Walker`s Grave # The Old Boiling Down Works # 100 year old Artesian Bore # Lawn Hill National Park # Adels Grove # Riversleigh Fossil Fields # Escott Lodge # World Barramundi Fishing Championships. The grasslands to the south support a vast array of wildlife including kangaroos, emus and a diverse range of birdlife. The Nicholson River located about 20 km to the west and fresh water and retains water most of the year. The wetlands are magnificent breeding grounds for Barramundi, crocodiles and prawns and a huge array of bird species.
