The North Queensland town of Ayr, located on the northern bank of the Burdekin River, about 85 km south of Townsville, is the capital of the Burdekin Shire. The Burdekin area is one of the largest sugar can growing areas in Australia and the district also produces about 30% of Australia`s mangoes and is a major producer of melons, fruit and vegetables. The Burdekin has rich array of rivers, tributaries and creeks and an extensive network of mangrove-lined estuaries that provide rich resources and habitats for fishing and crabbing. Target species include barramundi, mangrove jack and trevally. Nearby is the magnificent Alva Beach that offers many kilometres of untouched, secluded, sandy beaches and tropical coastline that is popular beach fishing,, canoeing, kayaking, wind surfing, kite surfing and bird watching. Alva Beach is also renowned as the launch site for access to the wreck dive on the remains of the SS Yongala. The district has a wide range of places to stay and a diverse range of attractions and activities to suit all possible tastes and budgets and is renowned for its friendly service. Visit the Burdekin Theatre, Ayr Nature Display and explore the Burdekin River Irrigation Area. There are excellent recreation, cultural, arts and craft, sporting, and tourist facilities.
